Weekly Hiphop Roundup: February 28th – March 5th

Hey all!

Each week I’m going to write a weekly post summarising the notable projects and singles that released during the week. I’m planning on doing this on the same day each week, probably on the Friday before the wave of Friday albums drop, so each post will cover the previous Friday-Thursday.

I’m doing this mainly so I can come back to them in the future and see when certain things dropped, but also hope to help others catch some fresh music that you may have missed. I’ll include some links to any reviews I’ve done on the projects, streaming services to listen to them, and anything else that may be relevant.

I’m a couple days late this week, had a really busy week elsewhere, excuse the delay. Enjoy!

Final Notes and Thoughts

Overall I felt like this was another super solid week all round, and a great end to a strong February. We saw the release of a bunch of albums, a great quantity of loosies and singles, plus a bunch of quality rap features on songs from other genres.

In terms of the albums I thought G Herbo’s PTSD was much stronger than I was expecting, and was an enjoyable listen. Meanwhile I felt like Lil Baby’s ‘My Turn’ was a let down, with only a couple of standouts on a 20 Track album. I’m excited to check out ‘A-Team’ by Zaytoven and the 3 Lil’s, and I’ll probably end up checking out the Ant Clemons & Juelz Santana just for the features. ShooterGang Kony also dropped his Red Paint Reverend album which has a couple of songs I’m a big fan of (Bussdown & Street Talk) so I’m keen to give that album a peep one day too, never heard ShooterGang Kony before.

It was actually a great week in terms of loose songs, probably not the best of the year but was still impressive in terms of both quantity and quality. I thoroughly enjoyed Drakes 2 random singles he dropped on YouTube and Soundcloud, at this point I think I like them more than his 2 song Care Package and his 2 song ‘Scary Hours’ drop. Juice Wrld continued to impress me with his ‘Jack and Jill’ single, showcases what a great talent we lost. One of my favourite rappers; Spark Master Tape, made his return after a year off with a couple of decent singles in ‘Drmn’ & ‘Kkashuu’. A bunch of super solid rap songs dropped this week that I won’t delve into to save time; ‘Trapped In’ by Reason with help from Boogie and Ab-Soul, ‘Die A Legend’ by Jarren Benton, the Rick Ross assisted ‘Banana Clip’ by Redeyez & Ace Binladen, and the ‘Slidin Remix’ which sees Trae Tha Truth enlist Mozzy, E-40, OT Genasis & $tupid Young for guest verses.

There were also a couple of more chill tracks with female vocals that I really enjoyed, namely ‘Cruel Intentions’ by Delacey and G-Eazy, and ‘Happiness Over Everything’ by Jhené Aiko with help from Miguel & Future. Easily my favourite song of the week, and possibly the year, is the song ‘Work’ by producer Apashe and featuring vocals from Young Buck Of G-Unit fame. The song mixes an old school rap vibe with this edm/dubstep vibe, with touches of orchestral Star Wars-like instrumentation this really has to be Heard to understand; if you check out any song from this list make it that one!

What were your favourite songs of the week?

Is there anything that you think I may have missed?

Thanks For Reading!
