Weekly Hiphop Roundup: April 24 – April 30

Hey hey!

Each week I’m going to write a weekly post summarising the notable projects and singles that released during the week. I’m planning on doing this on the same day each week, probably on the Friday before the wave of Friday albums drop, so each post will cover the previous Friday-Thursday.

I’m doing this mainly so I can come back to them in the future and see when certain things dropped, but also hope to help others catch some fresh music that you may have missed. I’ll include some links to any reviews I’ve done on the projects, streaming services to listen to them, and anything else that may be relevant.

I’m a couple of day’s late this week but this will still only cover the previous Friday-Thursday. Enjoy!

My Thoughts On The Week

I thought this was an okay week overall, but it’s pales in comparison to most weeks this year. There was a decent amount of albums but not too many that I was hyped enough for to listen too. In terms of singles it was one of the quieter weeks this year with not many songs being released by big name artists, and not many quality releases at all.

There were a couple of notable albums this week, with the ones that I was most interested in being Youngboy Never Broke Again’s ‘38 Baby 2’ and Lil Gotit’s ‘Hood Baby 2’. These were the only main releases that interested me based on the quality of the artists recent work, but there lots of other potentially good projects. Two rappers who have always been on my radar but never really wowed me are K Camp & Trouble, who both releases full length albums in ‘Kiss 5’ & ‘Thug Luv’ respectively. Guapdad 4000 and Chance the Rapper both released compilations of their respective Quarantine singles with ‘Platinum Falcon Tape, Vol. 1’ & ‘Instagram EP’. A couple of rappers who I’ve been a fan of in past both released projects with Jon Connor dropping his ‘SOS’ album and XV dropping his ‘With God Among Us’ EP. A couple of new rappers popped onto my radar with albums this week, with Lonr. delivering an album which piqued my interest with a couple of great features from H.E.R. & 24kGoldn; and Hardo catching my eye dropping his ‘Days Inn’ album with features from JID, Sada Baby, OMB Peezy and a range of others. I also am interested in the tapes from Eric Bellinger & Fivio Foreign based off their singles/features, so there was lots of potential this week but not a lot of big name releases!

In terms of singles I think it was a fairly bad week with not too many big songs dropping, and not too many good songs dropping either. I really liked the sound of the new Juice Wrld Track ‘Righteous’ despite not thinking it was anything amazing, and I enjoyed the new single ‘Sticc To The Code’ by one of my favourite up and comers Quando Rondo. Young Dolph dropped a menacing banger in ‘Sunshine’ and Megan Thee Stallion enlisted Beyoncé for the remix to her tik tok hit ‘Savage’. I really enjoyed the new Coi Leray song ‘Better Days’ which features a decent guest verse from Fetty Wap, and I loved the Smino feature on the Alina Baraz song ‘Gimme The Wheel’ from her new album. T-Pain linked up with Chris Brown for yet another amazing collaboration with ‘Wake Up Dead’, and Nino Man called upon French Montana, Jim Jones & Papoose for the humour filled banger ‘What I Need (remix)’. The main disappointments for me this week were the Lil Uzi single ‘Sasuke’ which I did not like at all, and the Kid Cudi/Travis Scott collab ‘The Scott’s’.

There were three standout songs to me this week, with the first being Reasons ‘Might Not Make It’ which is filled with dark and hilarious bars about how he would live life if he knew it was his last day. The second is the Blackway & Busta Rhymes collaboration ‘Intense’ which is just a rapid fire display of technical skill over a minimalistic still beat. And probably my favourite song of the week is Macky Gee & Tempa T’s ‘Not That Guy’ which is this extremely hype and aggressive mish mash of rap and high energy dance music. So overall it was quite a slow week in comparison to others, but still has a few worthy drops.

What were your favourite songs from the last week?

Is there’s anything notable that I seem to have missed?

Thanks For Reading!
